English is the second language in Puerto Rico. It is a requisite in all schools on the island. It is taught to the students according to their learning styles, needs and experiences with the language.
For one hour daily, the students take the class. The teacher speaks English at all times. Even as they are surrounded by elements of the language the biggest challenge is self-confidence. Therefore, there is a great deal of time for non-formal, nonacademic, relaxed conversations.
Students work to enrich their vocabulary, grammar, words study, reading literature, (poetry, and plays) and writing skills. Working the themes with the core areas helps to increase vocabulary as well as self-esteem.
Sometime during the cycle they are divided into levels. This has been done to provide for differential learning. The following are lessons for the advance students. These self-motivated students need challenges and periodically work in teams with classmates with similar characteristics
