This is the first cycle in a year long study of U.S. History beginning with the Civil War. The culminating activity involves a visit to a local cemetery where an area is dedicated to veterans of the Civil War. Students, who have written letters to a selected soldier buried there locate the gravestones and quietly read their letters. One aim of the cycle is to help students establish personal connections to the past through gratitude and reflection.
